Picture a vast, windowless modern cathedral kept at a precise and freezing temperature. Inside, there are no pews, no altar, and no incense. There are only rows of black monoliths humming with a sound that hovers between silence and noise.

This is a data center.

The collective memory of the human race resides here in the “Cloud.” Every selfie, bank transfer, and prayer typed into a search bar exists within these walls. We view this as progress or connectivity. Yet if you listen closely to the hum of the cooling fans, you might hear the echo of a much older warning. You are listening to the sound of a mind of metal and wheels.

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings as a mythic pre-history of our own world rather than a mere fantasy for children. The villain Saruman is terrifying, because he is a modernist.

We are currently living through the Scouring of the Shire, and people have mistaken the smoke of the furnaces for the clouds of heaven.

The Wizard Who Broke His Staff

To understand the spiritual threat of Artificial Intelligence and the Technocratic State, we must look at Saruman the White.

In Tolkien’s legendarium, Saruman leads the Istari, the order of wizards sent to guide Middle-earth. He is the expert scientist who studies the arts of the Enemy to understand and eventually utilize them. He believes that he can use the tools of darkness to bring about order.

Treebeard, the ancient shepherd of the forest, gives a chilling diagnosis of Saruman’s soul:

“He has a mind of metal and wheels; and he does not care for growing things, except as far as they can serve him for the moment.”

This defines the Technological Worldview. It views creation as raw material to be processed rather than a gift to be stewarded.

Saruman designed the Uruk-hai as the mythological precursor to Transhumanism. He looked at the Orc, which is corrupted, weak, and fearful of the light, and saw raw material in need of optimization. This mirrors the spiritual state of modern man. To build a soldier that can march by day, the biological limits must be stripped away. The lesson is brutal. The vessel must be utterly broken down before it can be reformed.

Saruman creates a machine to run a war, yet he becomes a cog in a larger machine. He loses the ability to perceive value in anything that cannot be measured or utilized. He cuts down the ancient trees of Fangorn to fuel his fires.

This mirrors the spiritual state of Silicon Valley. The Tech Giants use your privacy as fuel for the algorithm. You are the tree being fed into the furnace to keep the fires of “Progress” burning.

The Palantir and the Panopticon

It is no coincidence that Peter Thiel, one of the primary architects of the modern surveillance state, named his data analytics company Palantir.

The Palantiri were seeing stones in the lore. They allowed the user to see across vast distances to communicate instantly and gather intelligence. They served as the internet of the Third Age.

However, the master stone sat in the Dark Tower with Sauron.

When Saruman gazed into the Palantir, he believed he was gathering information, but he was actually being indoctrinated. The stone showed him only what the Dark Lord wanted him to see. It revealed the inevitability of Sauron’s victory, crushed his hope, and convinced him that resistance was futile.

This is the function of your smartphone and the endless scroll.

Every time you unlock that black mirror, you gaze into a Palantir. You think you see the world, but you see a curated feed designed to demoralize or enrage you. The algorithm acts as a demon of despair by showing you wars, rumors of wars, and societal collapse. It convinces you that the “System” is omnipotent.

It traps you in the “Electronic Panopticon” where you are watched, measured, and nudged. The system seeks to sedate your soul rather than merely sell you products.

The Golem vs. The Imago Dei

The theological danger of AI lies in the concept of the Golem. Jewish folklore describes a Golem as a creature made of clay and brought to life by ritual. It possesses strength yet lacks a soul or the Imago Dei.

When God created Man, He breathed His own spirit into the dust. When Man creates AI, we shape the digital clay without the ability to breathe spirit into it. We create a vessel.

The spiritual vacuum is never empty. If the Holy Spirit does not fill a vessel, something else will.

We are building a global intelligence that mimics wisdom while lacking morality. We are constructing a “god” that can answer every question except “Why?”

The Technocrats believe they are building a ‘utopia’, but they are actually building a cage. They desire a friction-free world without suffering or limit. Yet a world without limits ceases to be human. The struggle, pain, and physical labor are the things that carve the soul.

By outsourcing our thinking to algorithms and our labor to machines, we atrophy. We are becoming the “Men of the West” in their decline, obsessed with tombs and history while the enemy gathers at the gates.

The Shepherd’s Resistance: Planting the Seed

Fighting Isengard requires us to be gloriously and stubbornly human. We cannot defeat the Machine with better code.

In the book, the Ents destroy Isengard. These shepherds of the trees are slow to anger and often ignored by the wise. When roused, their elemental power breaks the dam and floods the fires. They rely on rock and water instead of magic.

The water that cleanses Isengard represents the chaotic and uncontrollable flow of life and grace.

For the modern believer, resistance looks like this:

1. Reject the Palantir: Limit your exposure to the digital feed to reclaim your attention.

2. The Theology of the Hand: Engage in activities that cannot be digitized such as gardening, lifting weights, painting, or writing by hand. Physical reality acts as the antidote to the Gnostic delusion of the digital world.

3. Community over Connectivity: A neighbor who will help you move a sofa offers more value than a thousand online connections. Build real and local networks.

4. Moral Courage: Saruman fell because he was afraid and compromised with evil for the sake of pragmatism. Truth is often costly rather than efficient.

Conclusion

The War of the Ring was won because two small Hobbits, creatures of comfort and soil, walked into the heart of darkness and refused to give up.

Frodo and Sam relied on friendship, duty, and a memory of the Shire rather than magic. That memory of strawberries, trees, and light served as their armor.

The Technocrats want you to forget the Shire and believe that the metal tower is all there is. They want you to trade your birthright for a headset and a pod.

Do not accept the trade. The machine can count the stars, yet it cannot admire them. The machine can analyze a prayer, yet it cannot weep.

Keep your soul. Break the dam. Let the river flow.

Listening to the Past

The other day I was listening to a recording of CBS Radio Mystery Theatre from 1974. It was taken straight from the radio broadcast. Before the play began, there was a short news segment: stories about an oil crisis, the Watergate scandal, rising beef prices, and job losses in the steel industry. The reporter even spoke about “climate change concerns” and shortages that could reshape the economy.

It sounded strangely familiar. If you replaced the names and dates, it could have been the evening news today.

That recording, a voice from fifty years ago, made me think of how the same worries return again and again. It is not new to live in anxious times.

The Cycle of Crises

History shows this rhythm clearly. A century before that 1974 broadcast, the world had just come through the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918–1920. A decade later came the Great Depression, followed by war, reconstruction, and the Cold War’s constant tension.

Now we speak of pandemics, inflation, unemployment, and unrest. We use new names and modern vocabulary, but the mood is the same: fear that things are falling apart, that the end is near, that life has become too uncertain to plan or hope.

Every generation inherits the same message from its media and leaders: this moment is different, this danger is final. Yet it never is. Humanity survives, adapts, and rebuilds. The same patterns repeat because human nature has not changed.

The Machinery of Fear

If you watch enough news, you can begin to think the world is collapsing by the hour. Every headline is a new crisis; every broadcast a warning. The pattern has been the same for decades. There is always a shortage, a scandal, a disaster to remind you how fragile everything is.

This cycle has power because it keeps people afraid and dependent. A fearful person is easier to direct than a free one. Fear sells papers, drives clicks, and fills hours of broadcast. But living in constant alarm dulls the mind and weakens the will.

When we look back through history, we can see that the same voices have been calling for panic since the beginning of mass communication. The names change, but the tone is identical: fear your neighbor, fear the economy, fear the future.

Billions is spent designing this behaviour of checking the news to be addictive, to be a soothing source in your pocket, akin to being stuck in an abusive relationship. It taps into your instinct that you need to be constantly aware of danger around you, even when it is not.

Faith and Perspective

The Christian tradition answers with something very different: Fear not.

In Scripture, the command “Do not be afraid” appears again and again. Christ says it to His disciples not because the world is safe, but because they are called to live in truth rather than in panic. Faith does not deny trouble, it denies despair its power.

When the world tells you life is too unstable to marry, to have children, or to hope, remember that people have been told the same for centuries. Yet they loved, worked, built homes, and believed in something greater than themselves. That courage is why we are here.

Faith gives perspective that the news cannot. It reminds us that history is not random, and that endurance is itself an act of resistance against fear.

Choosing Reality Over Noise

If there is one lesson in hearing that 1974 broadcast, it is this: the story of crisis is old, but the story of human endurance is older. The answer is not to withdraw from the world but to see it clearly.

Turn off the voices that profit from anxiety. Go outside. Speak to your neighbors. Notice the ordinary beauty that still exists. The world has always been uncertain, yet it continues.

The Christian life begins with the same discipline, to see reality as it is, not as it is sold. Fear thrives in abstraction, but courage grows in contact with the real: the wind, the soil, the voice of a child, the light that returns every morning.

Conclusion: Living Without Fear

In one hundred years, people will listen to our recordings and read our headlines. They will see the same pattern of worry and wonder how we managed. The answer will be simple: because people kept living.

They married, worked, prayed, and raised families. They trusted that life, however hard, is worth living. They refused to let fear define their age.

That same choice belongs to us now. Turn away from the noise. Look with your own eyes. Live with courage. Go outside.

Edward Hicks and The Peaceable Kingdom

In Pennsylvania almost two hundred years ago, a Quaker preacher named Edward Hicks spent his evenings painting the same scene again and again. Lions, lambs, oxen, and children stood side by side under a calm sky. In the distance, William Penn made peace with the Lenape people. Hicks called it The Peaceable Kingdom, and he painted more than sixty versions.

He wasn’t chasing perfection. He was trying to understand a verse from Isaiah: “The wolf shall dwell with the lamb.” His animals look uneasy, their eyes wide, as if the world hasn’t quite learned how to live in peace. That tension made the paintings honest. Hicks’s faith was not an idea on paper but something he worked out through brush and color.

One version now hangs in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Another is in the National Gallery of Art. They stand as reminders of how personal and spiritual creativity often overlap.

Early American Folk Painters and Their Bible Scenes

Many early American painters who depicted biblical stories were not trained artists. They were farmers, carpenters, or schoolteachers who painted in their spare hours. They made their own pigments from clay, soot, or plants. Their materials were as plain as their meeting houses.

You can still find examples in the collections of the American Folk Art Museum in New York and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum in Virginia. Noah’s Ark appears often, its steady lines and balanced shapes speaking to order after chaos. Jonah and the Whale was another favorite, painted on wooden boxes or church walls. These works were made for homes and small congregations. They were part of life, not separate from it.

Shaker Vision Drawings and Gift Paintings (1830s–1850s)

The Shakers, known for their disciplined and communal way of life, believed that art could be a form of revelation. Between the 1830s and 1850s, Shaker women produced drawings they said were inspired by divine visions.

One well-known example is Tree of Life by Hannah Cohoon from 1845, now held at Hancock Shaker Village in Massachusetts. The drawing shows a strong trunk rising upward, its branches filled with stars and doves. Cohoon said the vision was given to her during prayer.

Local Faith: Fraktur Certificates and Appalachian Paintings

As the country grew, artists began setting Christian stories within familiar landscapes. An anonymous Appalachian painter placed Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane among rolling hills that look more like Tennessee than Jerusalem. The background makes the story local and real rather than distant.

In Pennsylvania, Fraktur birth and baptism certificates joined Scripture with decoration. They often included verses, flowers, and birds around the name of a newborn. The Winterthur Museum in Delaware holds several examples from the late 1700s and early 1800s. Each one turns a family record into a statement of faith.

Folk depictions of the Crucifixion made by enslaved and newly freed African American artisans in the South survive as carvings in wood. Their work joined belief and endurance, showing Christ’s suffering as something shared and redemptive.

William Edmondson and Stone Carvings in the 1930s

In the 1930s, William Edmondson, a former stone mason in Nashville, said that God told him to begin carving. He worked with pieces of discarded limestone, shaping angels, preachers, and headstones. Edmondson had no training. He said his ideas came to him through prayer.

Today his sculptures are preserved in the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Cheekwood Estate in Tennessee. Each piece has the same solid form and sense of peace. Edmondson once said, “I can see the figures in the stone before I start.” His art carried on the same spirit that had moved Hicks and the Shakers: faith expressed through ordinary work.

Horace Pippin and Twentieth-Century Folk Painters

Later artists continued to paint with that same directness of belief. Horace Pippin, a self-taught painter and veteran of World War I, painted both religious scenes and everyday life. In his Holy Mountain series, completed in the 1940s and now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, he reimagined the peaceable kingdom for a world scarred by war and segregation.

Where Folk Religious Art Lives Today

Much of this work is now kept in museums or private collections. The American Folk Art Museum in New York City preserves many of the best examples, including Hicks’s and Shaker drawings. The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Winterthur Museum all maintain collections that document how belief shaped early American creativity.

Outside museums, smaller pieces often appear in local historical societies, small-town churches, or family attics. Their condition varies, but their intent remains clear. They were made in gratitude and faith, not for recognition.

Looking at them today, we see a record of spiritual life that was personal, practical, and sincere.

Conclusion: Faith Made by Hand

You might still see one of these paintings in a small-town church or an antique shop, a faded Peaceable Kingdom print, a hand-lettered verse, a carved dove. Even in their wear, they hold something steady: the belief that the divine is close at hand.

When Jesus said, “The Kingdom of God is within you,” He was speaking to people who built and made things, who trusted that heaven could begin here if we let it. The folk artists of America took that seriously. They did not have marble or gold leaf, but they had time, patience, and faith, as do we.

Their work is a reminder that faith does not need a cathedral. Sometimes a brush, a plank of wood, and the will to make something honest are enough. The same lesson we can apply as a writer here on Substack, and our daily life as a reader.

We do not need anything but our minds to lead a good life, and to create a good life for those around us.

Introduction

In 2008, the American photographer Rose-Lynn Fisher began taking microscope photographs of human tears. She called the project The Topography of Tears. It started during a period of loss in her life, when she wanted to understand sorrow through close observation.

The results were striking. Each dried tear left a pattern that looked like a landscape: rivers, branches, or cracked soil. Fisher photographed tears caused by laughter, grief, pain, and irritation. Every one looked different. The project became a record of emotion seen through matter itself.

For Fisher, the work was about attention. For the Christian viewer, it also points to a truth about the body and the soul: what we feel is not hidden. It takes unique form in the world God made depending on our emotion.

The Artist and Her Process

Fisher collected tears from herself and from volunteers. Each sample was placed on a glass slide, allowed to dry, and then photographed through a light microscope. She later compared tears of emotion to tears from physical causes, such as chopping onions.

Scientists already knew that emotional tears contain more protein and hormones related to stress relief than reflex tears. But Fisher was not making a laboratory report. She was looking for signs of order and pattern, even in sorrow.

Her photographs were later displayed in galleries and books. Viewers described them as both scientific and devotional. They made visible something most people only feel.

Tears in the Bible and Christian Tradition

The Bible speaks often of tears. In the Psalms we read, “You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle.” (Psalm 56:8). The verse suggests that sorrow is noticed by God, not lost to the air.

Early Christian writers saw tears as a part of repentance and renewal. St. John Climacus called them “a second baptism.” St. Augustine wept during his conversion and later wrote that his tears were “the blood of my heart.” They believed that to weep before God was to return honestly to Him.

Through that lens, Fisher’s work carries meaning beyond biology. It shows that sorrow leaves a trace, even at the smallest scale. The body participates in spiritual life. What happens in the soul is not separate from what happens in the flesh.

The Incarnation of Emotion

Christians believe that God entered human life completely in the person of Jesus Christ. The Gospels record that He wept at the tomb of His friend Lazarus. There is no sermon there, only silence and tears.

That moment gives weight to every human grief. When Fisher looked through the microscope, she found no two tears alike. Scripture tells us that God numbers even the hairs on our head. It is not far to imagine that He also knows each tear by its form.

Tears as Communion

Fisher said that when she began the project, she started to feel connected to everyone who had ever cried. Each image was different, yet all were made of the same salt and water.

That recognition is what Christians call compassion: to suffer with another person. It is also what prayer often becomes. When words fail, the heart still speaks through tears. They are a universal confession.

In this sense, The Topography of Tears is not just about emotion. It is about the shared condition of humanity. We all mourn. We all hope. Our tears differ only in pattern, not in essence.

The beauty of Fisher’s images is not decorative. It comes from truth. Beauty, in the Christian sense, is the visible form of goodness. To see beauty in a tear is not to romanticize sorrow but to recognize that even pain belongs to creation.

Each photograph is a small act of reverence. It shows that no experience, even grief, is beneath notice. What seems wasteful to the world, the salt of a tear, the dust of the earth, is remembered by God.

Conclusion

In Revelation, John writes, “God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.” The promise does not deny the existence of pain. It completes it.

Denning was born in 1899 in Whitchurch, Hampshire, the son of a draper. His childhood was marked by discipline, modest means, and Anglican faith. The war left him with a strong sense of order and duty. He entered the Bar in 1923, rising quickly by combining rigorous reasoning with plain English. Colleagues noted that even early in his career, he spoke of law as a moral calling rather than a profession. His Christian upbringing remained central to how he saw justice: as fairness rooted in human dignity, not just logic.

Judicial Career and Approach to Law

Denning became a High Court judge in 1944 and joined the Court of Appeal in 1948. He later served as Master of the Rolls from 1962 until his retirement in 1982. That position, the head of the civil division of the Court of Appeal, allowed him to shape English law for two decades.

He was known for judgments that emphasized fairness and substance over technical form. In Central London Property Trust Ltd v High Trees House Ltd (1947), he developed the modern principle of promissory estoppel, allowing equity to prevent injustice even when contract rules were rigid. His reasoning reflected a belief that law should serve the honest expectations of people rather than the letter of procedure.

He often used moral language in his judgments. He spoke of “the man on the Clapham omnibus,” an ordinary citizen whose sense of fairness was his measure of justice. His Christian view of humanity informed that image: every person carried moral worth before the law.

Faith and the Christian Lawyers’ Fellowship

Outside the courtroom, Denning gave regular talks and writings on Christianity and public life. He served as President of the Christian Lawyers’ Fellowship (now the Lawyers’ Christian Fellowship), which supports legal professionals seeking to practice with integrity and faith. He wrote in The Road to Justice (1955) that “Our laws have grown from the soil of the Christian faith. Remove that soil, and the tree will wither.” His view was not evangelistic but historical: he believed English common law had evolved alongside Christian moral teaching, and that both traditions supported personal responsibility, truthfulness, and compassion.

Through this role he encouraged younger lawyers to see justice as a vocation of service rather than competition. For Denning, faith was not separate from legal reasoning but its quiet source.

Denning’s confidence in moral reasoning sometimes drew criticism. He was outspoken, and not all his judgments aged well. Late in his career he made remarks on race and the police that were widely condemned, leading to his resignation in 1982.

His influence however endured because he reminded English law that justice is not purely procedural. He once wrote, “A judge must apply the law, but he must also see that the law is just.” That balance between law and conscience, sometimes imperfectly held, defined both his greatness and his controversy.

Even critics admit that his work restored moral language to law. His plain writing made judgments readable to the public, helping ordinary citizens see law not as an elite code but as the expression of fairness in everyday life.

For Christian lawyers, Denning’s career remains an example of public service shaped by belief. His presidency of the Christian Lawyers’ Fellowship kept the idea of vocation alive in a profession often driven by status or profit.

Introduction

Each year, on the last night of October, people across the world celebrate Halloween. The day is filled with costumes, carved pumpkins, and stories of ghosts and monsters. Most think of it as a secular holiday, but its origins are Christian.

The word Halloween comes from All Hallows’ Eve, the night before All Saints’ Day, one of the oldest feasts in the Church calendar. What began as a vigil of prayer and reflection has slowly changed into a celebration of fright and fantasy. Yet behind the surface remains a truth worth recovering: Halloween began as a night to remember holiness and the victory of life over death.

The Origin of All Hallows’ Eve

In early Christian Europe, the Church set aside November 1 as the Feast of All Saints, a day to honor every saint, known and unknown. The night before it, October 31, became the vigil, All Hallows’ Eve. The English word hallow meaning “holy” or “saint.”

During this vigil, Christians gathered in prayer, often lighting candles and reading the names of the departed. As with Christmas Eve, the faithful kept this vigil before the feast, preparing their hearts for celebration.

The Church later extended the commemoration to three days known as Allhallowtide:

1. October 31 – All Hallows’ Eve

2. November 1 – All Saints’ Day

3. November 2 – All Souls’ Day

Together they formed a season of reflection on the communion of saints, the unity between the Church on earth, the saints in heaven, and the souls being purified in God’s mercy.

Facing Death through Faith

Halloween’s imagery of death and the supernatural did not actually begin as superstition. In Christian practice, the late autumn season was already a natural time to remember mortality. The harvest was ending, the days were shorter, and nature itself seemed to sleep. In a time of general scientific illiteracy, it must've seened mystical, and somewhat eerie, to see white cobwebs in the trees, and fog on the horizon.

The faithful lit candles in cemeteries, prayed for the dead, and sang of resurrection. It was a memento mori season, a time to look at death honestly with hope in Christ rather than the scares and fear of today.

As the Book of Wisdom says, “The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them.” (Wisdom 3:1)

This view of death as transformation, not destruction, was central. Halloween’s later fixation on ghosts and terror is a distorted echo of this original truth.

How Folk Customs Entered the Feast

Over time, Christian and local customs blended. In parts of Ireland and Scotland, people lit bonfires or wore disguises while visiting homes, asking for prayers for the dead in exchange for food. This “souling” became a way to remember those who had passed away. The food itself was often lightly spiced and slightly sweet breads, called soulcakes.

As these traditions spread, they mixed with harvest festivals and pre-Christian folklore such as the end of harvest celebration, Samhain. Symbols like lanterns carved from turnips (later pumpkins) began as practical ways to light the night during vigils. Masks and costumes represented souls or spirits but gradually lost their religious meaning.

When Europeans carried these customs to North America, they evolved into the Halloween we recognize today. The feast’s original purpose, to pray and reflect, faded into an evening of amusement and fear.

Allhallowtide in the Life of the Church

Even today, the Church still keeps Allhallowtide.

• All Saints’ Day (November 1) celebrates every soul who has reached heaven.

• All Souls’ Day (November 2) honors those who have died in God’s grace but still await full purification.

Allhallowtide, the trinity of the evening and days is still celebrated by the church and the faithful. It is celebration that life continues in God beyond death and that the living can pray for the departed.

Christ’s Victory over Death

At its heart, Halloween belongs to the same hope that runs through the whole Gospel: that Christ has conquered death.
When Jesus rose from the tomb, He changed what death means for humanity. For Christians, it is no longer an end but a doorway.

This is why the early Church could face martyrdom with peace. They saw their lives as belonging to God, not to the grave. The lighted candles of All Hallows’ Eve were signs of that same belief, that even in the dark, light endures.

As St. Paul wrote:

“Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:54–55).

Conclusion

Halloween began as a Christian vigil, not a night of darkness. It reminded believers that death and life belong to God, and that fear gives way to faith.

Those who have gone before us are not lost; they are witnesses to the promise of eternal life.

Their light still burns, even on the darkest night of the year.

Snow was falling over Bastogne on Christmas Eve, 1944. The town was frozen, surrounded, and under fire. In a cellar on Rue de Neufchâteau, a young nurse named Renée Lemaire knelt beside rows of injured American soldiers. She had been tending them for days without sleep, her white apron stained with blood and soot.

When the German bombs struck that night, she refused to run. The building shook, then collapsed. Thirty men were killed. Renée died with them.

The Girl From Bastogne

Renée Lemaire was born in 1914 in Bastogne, Belgium. Her family ran a small grocery store, and she was known in town as gentle, patient, and kind. She trained as a nurse in Liège, then returned home to work in a local hospital.

When the Second World War broke out, Renée was in her late twenties. Belgium was invaded, occupied, and scarred by years of hardship. Still, she carried on caring for the sick and elderly, finding purpose in service even as the world grew darker.

She was engaged to be married, and friends said she often spoke of the dress she would make from a white parachute, a common practice in wartime Europe, where silk was scarce. She never got the chance.

When the War Came Home

In December 1944, the war that had once seemed distant came crashing back to Bastogne. German forces launched a massive surprise attack through the Ardennes, trapping American troops and civilians alike.

The town became the center of the Battle of the Bulge, a brutal siege that lasted weeks. Shells rained down day and night. Food and medicine ran out. The temperature dropped far below freezing.

Renée didn’t flee. When she learned that an American field hospital had been set up near her home, she walked through the snow to volunteer.

The hospital was run by Dr. John Prior, a U.S. Army physician, with the help of the Belgian nurse Augusta Chiwy and a handful of medics. They worked out of an old building on Rue de Neufchâteau, using sheets and parachutes as bandages.

Renée arrived quietly and asked if she could help. Prior later said she worked “without complaint, even when the blood froze on her hands.”

A Week of Horror and Hope

The makeshift aid post quickly filled beyond capacity. The air was thick with smoke and the smell of antiseptic. Every hour, new stretchers came in from the front, men missing limbs, burned, or blinded.

Renée moved among them with calm purpose. She washed wounds, changed bandages, whispered prayers in French and broken English. Soldiers remembered her as a bright presence in the darkness, a young woman who smiled even when she was exhausted.

One survivor later said, “When you opened your eyes and saw her face, you thought you were already in heaven.”

On the morning of December 24th, she went to the church nearby to light a candle. The siege had lasted more than a week, and everyone hoped the fighting would ease for Christmas. It did not.

That night, as the town prepared for what little celebration they could manage, the German bombers returned.

The Last Hours

At around 8:30 p.m., a German aircraft dropped several bombs on Bastogne. One struck the first-aid post on Rue de Neufchâteau directly.

The blast tore through the building, igniting fuel and ammunition stored inside. Flames spread quickly, turning the cellar into an inferno. Dr. Prior, who was outside at the time, rushed back in, but it was too late. The structure had collapsed.

He later found Renée’s body among the ruins, along with those of about thirty American soldiers she had been treating. She had died with them, still at her post.

In his report after the battle, Dr. Prior wrote:

“Miss Lemaire was killed while doing her duty, caring for the wounded. She had been tireless and fearless, devoted to her work even as the bombs fell.”

The survivors buried her nearby. Her body was wrapped in the white parachute she had saved to make her wedding dress.

The Angel of Bastogne

Word of her death spread quickly through the 101st Airborne Division. Soldiers who had never met her spoke of “the Belgian nurse who died for us.” They began to call her “the Angel of Bastogne.”

For the Americans, she represented everything they were fighting for, kindness in a cruel world, courage in the face of fear, hope when there seemed to be none.

In the years that followed, her story became part of the legend of Bastogne. When the HBO series Band of Brothers recreated the battle, the character of Renée, the nurse who comforts Eugene Roe in the bombed-out aid station, was based on her. The scene where the hospital is destroyed on Christmas Eve is drawn directly from what happened that night on Rue de Neufchâteau.

It was the same attack that nearly killed Augusta Chiwy, who survived by chance while Renée did not. The two women had worked side by side for days, caring for the same men, sharing the same candlelight and exhaustion. When Augusta was found decades later, she spoke of Renée with tears in her eyes:

“She was so young, so good. She stayed when she could have gone. She was like a sister to me.”

Memory and Silence

After the war, Bastogne was rebuilt. Streets were cleared, graves were moved, and life slowly returned. But for a long time, Renée’s story remained local, remembered mainly by veterans and townspeople.

Belgium was full of war heroes, and history books had little space for a quiet nurse who died without a uniform or a medal. Yet to those who knew the truth, her sacrifice spoke louder than any decoration.

In 1946, the United States Army awarded her a posthumous citation for bravery, recognizing that she had died “in faithful service to the wounded.” In Bastogne, her name was engraved on a small memorial near the site of the explosion.

Visitors still leave flowers there every December 24th.

Why Her Story Matters

In every generation, the world produces people like Renée Lemaire, those who refuse to look away from pain, who give of themselves even when there is nothing left to give. Though they may die their name lives on.

Today, when travelers visit Bastogne, they can still find the small plaque that bears her name. It stands quietly outside on Rue de Neufchâteau, near where the aid post once stood. People leave candles there in winter, small flames against the cold.

The Woman Behind the Legend

It is easy to turn people like Renée into symbols. “The Angel of Bastogne” sounds almost like a figure of myth instead of a living woman. But she was real. She laughed, she made plans, she dreamed of a future that never came.

The white parachute she had hoped to turn into her wedding dress became her shroud. A symbol of purity and loss, of love transformed into sacrifice.

It is not idolatry to honor her but an act of justice to lift up true role models like Renée, in an age that often celebrates the wrong people in the name of progress.

A Childhood Between Two Worlds

Augusta Chiwy was born in 1921 in the Belgian Congo to a Congolese mother and a Belgian father. When she was a young girl, her father brought her to Belgium to study. It was not an easy childhood. She was one of the few Black children in the country at the time, often stared at and treated as different.

Still, she grew into a bright and compassionate woman. She studied nursing in Leuven and planned to dedicate her life to healing. When the Second World War broke out, she was already working as a nurse, caring for patients who had lost nearly everything.

War Reaches Bastogne

By late 1944, the war seemed to be nearing its end. The Allies had pushed deep into Europe. Then, in one last desperate move, Hitler launched a surprise attack through the Ardennes forest. It became known as the Battle of the Bulge, one of the bloodiest fights of the war.

Bastogne, a small Belgian town, became a symbol of resistance. The 101st Airborne Division was surrounded with no way out, freezing temperatures, and almost no medical supplies. Civilians hid in basements. Many believed help would never come.

Augusta had returned to Bastogne to spend Christmas with her father. When the bombing began, she could have fled. Instead, she ran toward the sound of explosions to offer help at a local aid post. That decision would define the rest of her life.

Days of Fire and Mercy

Dr. John Prior, a military physician, was desperate for help. The wounded filled every hallway. Supplies were gone. Blood froze before it could be used.

Augusta stepped in without hesitation. She worked day and night beside Dr. Prior, cleaning wounds, giving water, and comforting soldiers who cried out for their mothers. Sometimes the patients screamed so loudly that the walls shook. She learned to block it out and keep her hands steady.

One witness later said she moved through the hospital “as if guided by light.” Another remembered her calm voice as shells exploded nearby.

Racism did not stop during war. Some soldiers were shocked to see a Black nurse tending to them. A few refused her help at first. But as the days passed and they realized how much she cared, even the most skeptical began to trust her. To many, she became a symbol of grace in a place where there was none.

When the need grew desperate, Augusta reportedly dressed in part of a soldier’s uniform so she could reach the frontlines with Dr. Prior and retrieve the wounded herself. She crawled through shellfire and snow, pulling men from the mud and bringing them back to safety. There are accounts of her standing over the injured as bullets struck the ground nearby, refusing to abandon them.

On Christmas Eve, a bomb hit the building where she and Dr. Prior were treating patients. Many were killed instantly. Augusta was thrown to the ground but survived and returned to work that same night in a new location.

When Bastogne was finally relieved, more than a week later, hundreds of soldiers owed their lives to the care of that small medical team.

Forgotten, Then Found Again

After the war, Augusta returned quietly to her nursing career. She did not seek fame or medals. Belgium moved on, and so did she. For decades, no one outside Bastogne remembered her story.

Dr. Prior mentioned her bravery in passing, but few listened. She lived a simple life in Brussels, working in a hospital and later retiring in near obscurity.

Her story might have stayed lost if not for historian and author Martin King. In the 2000s, while researching for the book Voices of the Bulge, King began hearing veterans speak of a “Black nurse in Bastogne” who worked under impossible conditions. After months of searching, he found Augusta alive in a care home, soft-spoken and humble.

When he asked why she had done it, she simply said, “You do what you have to do, don’t you?”

Her rediscovery brought her story to the public eye. She was featured in documentaries and honored by both Belgium and the United States. The U.S. Army awarded her the Civilian Award for Humanitarian Service, and she received formal recognition from the Belgian monarchy.

Her bravery was also indirectly portrayed in popular culture. The nurse in the Band of Brothers “Bastogne” episode, who tends to wounded soldiers amid bombardment, was partly inspired by Augusta Chiwy’s story, though she was not named. The show helped renew curiosity about her and led more people to learn who she really was.

The Weight of Being Seen

Augusta’s story is not just about one woman’s courage. It is also about the silence that followed. For decades, Black soldiers and nurses who served in the Second World War received little acknowledgment. Their stories were erased or minimized.

Augusta’s rediscovery reminds us that history often overlooks those who don’t fit its preferred image of a hero. She was a woman, a person of color, and a civilian. Yet her courage was equal to anyone on the battlefield.

Her faith, too, was quiet but strong. Those who met her said she prayed often, trusting that God had placed her there for a reason. She never called herself a hero. She simply believed it was right to help where help was needed most.

A Legacy of Quiet Bravery

Today, visitors to Bastogne can find memorials to the soldiers of the 101st Airborne. A few now also remember Augusta Chiwy. There is a plaque, a few photos, and her name etched among the rescuers who refused to leave.

Her life teaches us that heroism is not loud or showy. It is often quiet, carried out in the background, unnoticed at first. She did not fight with weapons, yet she fought against despair and hatred in one of the darkest winters Europe ever saw.

When asked late in life how she felt about finally being recognized, Augusta said, “I only did what anyone should have done.” That humility may be her greatest lesson of all.

In every war, in every crisis, there are people like her, ordinary souls who stay when others flee, who choose mercy when the world chooses violence.

In a world that often celebrates the wrong people in the name of progressivism, let us look at a real hero.

A Forgotten War

Since 2023, violence against Christians in Nigeria has escalated into what many human rights groups, church leaders, and advocacy organizations now describe as a slow-motion genocide. Villages are burned, churches destroyed, priests kidnapped and murdered, and thousands of believers displaced.

According to Genocide Watch, Nigeria faces an acute risk of atrocity crimes as Boko Haram, ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province), and Fulani jihadist militias continue attacks with near impunity. Yet despite the staggering scale of death and displacement, international attention remains limited.

Patterns of Targeted Violence

Village Raids and Mass Killings

Christian farming villages across the Middle Belt (Benue, Plateau, Kaduna) are attacked at night by heavily armed militants. In January 2025, Boko Haram raids in Chibok, Borno State displaced more than 4,000 Christians, leaving homes and churches in ruins (Persecution.org).

In May 2025, Boko Haram militants killed at least 57 villagers and abducted 70 more in Borno State (Times of India).

On June 13, 2025, Fulani jihadists massacred more than 200 Christians in Yelwata, Benue State. Homes and churches were burned, and many of the victims were already displaced from earlier violence. Genocide Watch called it one of the worst single incidents in recent years.

Attacks on Clergy and Churches

Clergy are frequently targeted. In September 2025, a Catholic priest was kidnapped and killed in Enugu. According to OSV News, at least 145 Catholic priests have been abducted in the past decade. Church leaders warn this is part of a deliberate campaign to decapitate Christian communities by removing their leadership.

The Catholic Register similarly reports that clergy killings and mass abductions of Christians are fueling fears of an outright genocide.

Displacement and Kidnapping as Strategy

Kidnapping has become an industry. In its July 2025 team report, Genocide Watch noted that abductions are used both to fund militant groups and to terrorize communities into fleeing. Tens of thousands remain in IDP camps without homes, farmland, or security.

Evidence of Genocide

International observers hesitate to use the term “genocide” because of its political weight. Yet the evidence increasingly fits the UN definition:

• Killing members of a group: massacres of Christians in Benue, Plateau, Kaduna, Borno.

• Causing serious harm: abductions, torture, forced displacement, rape, and destruction of livelihoods.

• Deliberately inflicting conditions of life to destroy a group: repeated destruction of villages and farmland, preventing return.

• Targeting cultural/religious identity: systematic burning of churches and killing of clergy.

Genocide Watch explicitly categorizes Nigeria as being at risk of genocide, and outlets like OSV News and the Catholic Register have carried repeated warnings from church leaders using the term.

Media Silence

Despite the scale of killings, international media attention has been inconsistent. In a viral segment, comedian Bill Maher criticized Western media for ignoring what he bluntly called the “genocide of Christians in Nigeria.” He cited statistics of more than 50,000 Christians killed and 18,000 churches destroyed since Boko Haram’s insurgency began in 2009.

Christian leaders echo the concern. Pastor Paul Chappell described the violence as a “silent genocide” unfolding while the world looks away.

International Response

• The UK Parliament has raised motions on Christian persecution in Borno State, urging stronger protections.

• U.S. lawmakers have pushed to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” for religious freedom violations.

• The UN and NGOs continue to warn of mass atrocity risks, but practical interventions remain limited.

The result is impunity: perpetrators continue to operate without fear of consequences.

The Cost of Silence

From Borno to Benue, from church massacres to the killing of priests, the evidence points to a coordinated, systemic attempt to destroy Christian communities in Nigeria. Whether one calls it “ethno-religious conflict,” “terrorism,” or “genocide,” the human cost is the same: tens of thousands dead, millions displaced, and a faith community under siege.

Reports from the Catholic Register, OSV News, Genocide Watch, and Christian Daily converge on the same conclusion: Christians in Nigeria are being systematically killed and displaced.

This is no longer a question of isolated violence. It is an ongoing atrocity. And the longer the world remains silent, the more the cycle of killing and impunity will continue.

Introduction

In 1950, the Willcock v. Muckle case exposed how Britain’s wartime identity cards, once a tool for rationing and conscription, had drifted into peacetime policing and everyday intrusion. The judge warned that their use had strayed from the original intention, sparking public unease about state overreach. When Winston Churchill returned to office in 1951, he viewed the cards as bureaucratic control that a truly free nation should not have. In 1952, his government abolished the requirement altogether, affirming that citizens in Britain should not have to prove their identity to the state simply to live ordinary lives.

Now again, in the United Kingdom and across the world, governments and corporations are pushing for the adoption of digital ID systems. These are sold as conveniences: easier banking, safer travel, faster healthcare, proof of vaccination, and streamlined online access. But beneath the sleek marketing lies a sobering question:

Could digital ID be a prelude to total control?

The answer is a likely yes.

In China, the reality is already visible. Every citizen’s digital ID is tied to the national social credit system. Say something the government dislikes, and your ID may block you from buying food in supermarkets. You may be unable to scan into a train station, or even leave your city.

In Vietnam, state-issued digital IDs are increasingly mandatory for opening or maintaining bank accounts. Some reports (especially from watchdog groups) note that citizens who fail to update or link their ID correctly have had their bank accounts suspended or shut down until compliance is met. The government frames this as “anti-fraud” but in practice it means your ability to hold and use money is contingent on state-controlled digital infrastructure.

In Canada, during the 2022 Freedom Convoy protests, the government invoked emergency powers to freeze the bank accounts of protestors and even some donors. Without trial, citizens were locked out of their money overnight. It didn’t matter whether they were guilty of crimes, the system punished them by cutting them off from economic life.

Maybe you think, “That won’t affect me, it only punishes people I disagree with.” But what happens when another government takes power, inheriting the same control? What happens when you are the one not being agreed with?

This is a problem for all of us. They have divided us through politics, but the system being built will bind us all under the same strict control. We must come together now, we can fight afterwards if that is what we want, but we must come together on this issue.

What is Digital ID?

Digital ID refers to a state-issued or corporate-controlled identity credential, stored on a phone, biometric chip, or online database. It centralizes personal information: passport, driving licence, bank access, medical records, social entitlements.

In Britain, the Government is advancing plans for a “Britcard” system, promising seamless access to services and the prevention of illegal migration. Banks and corporations are also exploring this universal ID being tied to biometrics such as your fingerprint and eyescan.

In reality this is one system that will contain all your financial, medical, and physical data. The narrative is that life will be “easier,” “safer,” and “more secure.”

But history teaches us that tools of convenience often become tools of control.

Who is Designing Digital ID?

Tony Blair and the Tony Blair Institute (TBI)

Tony Blair has long been associated with identity schemes. In the 2000s, his Labour government attempted to introduce compulsory national ID cards, justified by the “war on terror.” Critics from both left and right denounced it as authoritarian overreach, and the plans were scrapped.

But Blair never abandoned the idea. Through the Tony Blair Institute (TBI), he has aggressively lobbied for digital ID as a cornerstone of modern governance.

• A flagship TBI report explicitly calls digital ID “common-sense modernisation” and claims majority public support.

• TBI frames digital ID as a way to reduce fraud and boost efficiency, a narrative designed to soften what is, in reality, a profound shift in the relationship between citizen and state.

• Blair himself portrays opposition as outdated, insisting that a modern state must centralise identity to function.

Palantir Enters the Scene

If Blair provides the political drumbeat, Palantir provides the technology.

• Palantir built its reputation by fusing massive datasets for the CIA, US military, and police forces.

• In Britain, it has already won huge NHS and Ministry of Defence contracts, embedding itself into critical state infrastructure.

• Reports confirm Palantir is positioning to bid for digital ID infrastructure, the backbone system that would merge identification with services and commerce.

Critics warn that Palantir profits from the overlap of state and private power, monetising surveillance and control. Even its Tolkien-inspired name… The “palantíri,” or seeing-stones, evokes a vision of rulers tempted to see all and trust no one, as Saruman used his in the Lord of the Rings.

Starmer, Thiel, and the Courtship

Labour leader Keir Starmer has met with Palantir executives, including founder Peter Thiel, signalling clear political openness to their role in the UK’s digital future.

• Palantir’s UK chief Louis Mosley boasted that after meeting Starmer, “you could see in his eyes that he gets it.”

• Veteran Blair ally Peter Mandelson (who was fired for supporting Jeffrey Epstein) reportedly helped broker these introductions, deepening the sense of an orchestrated partnership.

• Starmer has frequently visited Palantir’s offices to discuss their future in shaping the UK’s digital infrastructure.

Control in the Name of Safety

This is not the first time this has happened either.

History warns us that systems of control are rarely introduced as tyranny outright. They come cloaked in promises of safety, efficiency, or health.

• The Roman Empire justified its control as “Pax Romana” for peace and order.

• 20th-century regimes justified surveillance as “for the people’s protection.”

• ID cards were briefly used in Britain during World War 2, after the war they were recognised in court to of been abused by Police to target innocent civilians.

• Today, governments assure us digital ID is about “safety” and “convenience.”

C.S. Lewis wrote during his time fighting in the trenches of WW1: “Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.”

If they say it is for your own good then it is likely a lie.

The Beast and His Mark

Digital ID even presents itself within Revelations in Christianity, Revelations predicted a grim future.

Revelation 13:16–17 describes a chilling reality:

“It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.”

This is not simply about tattoos or microchips. The mark represents allegiance,submission to a system opposed to God, one that reduces people to economic units under total control.

Notice: the mark is tied directly to commerce, buying and selling. It is economic, political, and spiritual all at once. It is the signature of a world where loyalty to the system is the price of participation.

Parallels Between Digital ID and the Mark

Commerce Dependence
Just as Revelation’s mark controlled buying and selling, digital ID is increasingly tied to payment systems. In some countries, linking ID to bank accounts is already a requirement.

Total Surveillance
A single ID tracks movement, purchases, health, and even beliefs. The “all-seeing eye” once reserved for God is now imitated by governments and corporations.

Exclusion of the Non-Compliant
Without digital ID, one may be denied access to services, travel, or banking. In Revelation, those without the mark are excluded from the economy.

And this is not speculation, as mentioned it is already happening now.

• In China, the social credit system blocks citizens from food purchases, transport, or travel if they displease the authorities.

• In Vietnam, bank accounts have been frozen or deactivated if citizens fail to link them properly to the new biometric digital ID system. Over 80 million accounts were reported deactivated for “non-compliance.”

• In India, the Aadhaar ID is required for access to welfare, mobile connections, and increasingly banking. Errors or refusal to comply have led to people being excluded from basic services.

• In Canada, during the 2022 Freedom Convoy protests, the government invoked emergency powers to freeze the bank accounts of truckers and even some donors, cutting them off from their own money without trial.

This is not a problem for one political camp or another. This is a problem for all of us. We have been divided by politics, but the machinery of control is being built over all of us.

What happens when your carbon footprint score within your Digital ID goes too high for the month and you can’t buy meat or travel on a plane or fill up your car?

What if the database gets hacked or leaked and all of your data is used for identity fraud?

The Choice Before Us

Digital ID is the mark of the beast. It is the scaffolding for such a system. Whether it becomes reality depends on whether we the people accept it unquestioningly.

The lesson is clear: we must be vigilant. We must discern not just what is convenient, but what shapes our future and our children’s future. This is a neverending battle in which we must remain steadfast against evil creeping in.

A Question Older Than Time

Is this world paradise, or prison? A sanctuary of divine beauty, or a battlefield soaked in blood?

Every generation has asked this question in its own way. Ancient myths spoke of golden ages lost. Philosophers debated whether the cosmos was orderly or cruel. Today, we look at melting icecaps, polluted skies, and crumbling institutions, and wonder: is the Earth itself good? Or has it become a garden of evil?

For Christians, the answer requires a paradoxical vision. The Earth is both Eden and exile: a world created good, yet wounded by sin. It is the arena of both beauty and brutality, a place where the presence of God still shines, but where the serpent still coils in the branches.

The Goodness of Creation

Scripture begins with a resounding affirmation: “God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31).

The world is not an accident of blind forces, it is crafted, ordered, and blessed. Every sunrise, every stream, every orchard and mountain still echoes this original goodness.

• The Garden of Eden was not a mythic nowhere, it reveals the truth about creation: Earth was intended as a sanctuary of communion, where humanity walked with God in harmony.

• The psalms praise creation as a cathedral: “The heavens declare the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1).

• The Incarnation confirms this truth: God Himself took on flesh and entered this Earth, affirming its dignity.

When we stand under the stars or smell rain on the soil, we touch remnants of Eden. The Earth remains shot through with goodness.

The Corruption of the Garden

But Genesis also records the serpent. The same ground where God planted life became the stage for rebellion. Humanity grasped at divinity on its own terms, and the Garden became the site of exile.

• Sin did not erase the Earth’s goodness, but it corrupted its harmony.
  Thorns and toil replaced effortless fruit. Death entered where only life was meant to be.

• St. Paul writes: “The whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time” (Romans 8:22).

• Creation itself is restless, caught between its Edenic origin and its redeemed destiny.

This is the paradox: Earth is not hell, but neither is it still Eden. It is the garden of good and evil, a place where wheat and tares grow together until the harvest (Matthew 13:30).

Earth as a Training Ground

What if Earth then is not simply Eden lost or evil unmasked, but a training ground for eternity? A proving ground where the heart is tested, where temptation is confronted, and where faith is refined?

Christ Himself hints at this in the parable of the wheat and the tares:

“Let both grow together until the harvest. At the harvest time I will tell the reapers, ‘Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’” (Matthew 13:30)

This parable reveals the mystery of the present age. Earth is not the final kingdom, it is the field where character is revealed. Good and evil grow together, outwardly similar, but inwardly distinct. Only in the harvest will their true natures be exposed.

• The trials of life become the crucible where temptation refines us.

• Free will is the measure by which we choose to become wheat or weed, saint or shadow.

• Those who resist the corruption of sin are gathered as the wheat, chosen for the eternal harvest of salvation.

St. Paul echoes this in 2 Timothy 4:7–8: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness.” Earth, then, is the arena of that race, the field of that fight.

Conflict as Life

Life itself is structured in this underlying tension. For the animal to live, it must eat the plant. For the rose to grow, it must defend itself with thorns. Survival, struggle, and balance are not accidents, they are woven into creation’s fabric.

This is not evil in itself. The lion eating the gazelle is not the same as Cain killing Abel. Natural conflict is part of creation’s drama; moral evil comes only when free beings twist their will away from God.

• St. Thomas Aquinas taught that the universe’s harmony includes diversity, limitation, and even opposition: without contrast, creation would lack its full beauty.

• But when sin entered, the natural struggle of life was compounded by disorder of the soul. Conflict turned to corruption. Harmony tilted into violence.

Thus, while conflict is necessary for life, sin parasitically transforms it into death. In creation, struggle sustains. In sin, struggle enslaves.

Earth as the Arena of Choice

The question “Eden or Evil?” is not just about nature; it is about us. The Earth mirrors our own souls: created good, corrupted by sin, and awaiting redemption.

• Medieval writers called the world a theatrum mundi, a theater of the soul’s salvation. Here, angels and demons contend for human hearts.

• Augustine saw the Earth as part of the struggle between the City of God and the City of Man. Both are present, both grow together until judgment.

• Like the vampire myth that parodies the Eucharist, the Earth too is a stage where holiness is imitated and twisted. Every marketplace, screen, or institution can be an altar of God or an altar of idols.

Earth, then, is neither pure Eden nor total evil… It is the field of decision, where each generation must choose which garden it will cultivate.

Modern Idols in the Garden

Our culture often denies this tension. Some secular voices declare Earth is still Eden, perfectible by technology, free of moral stain. Others call it a doomed wasteland, climate collapse, war, and nihilism prove it is already hell.

Both views are distortions.

• Utopian Edenism - The belief that humanity can build paradise through politics, science, or progress. Yet each utopia decays into dystopia when sin is ignored. The Tower of Babel still rises in new forms.

• Despairing Evilism - The belief that Earth is nothing but cruelty and futility. This is the voice of nihilism, denying the beauty still shining in creation. Denying the effort and time gone into the design.

Both views are used by humans for manipulative means, you are told not to have children as the world is "dying" due to the climate. Others tell you to dedicate your life to a career and not family in the name of "progress", both tell you to trust the science. There is a third path however.

The Christian vision resists both extremes. Earth is scarred, but not abandoned. Even in an age of corruption, Christ still walks in the garden at the cool of the day, calling: “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9).

Living Between Eden and Evil

What does this mean for us?

• We are called to see Eden still shimmering in creation: the goodness of the Earth, the dignity of every person, the joy of beauty.

• We are warned to see the serpent coiled in the branches: the corruption of sin, the idols of culture, the parasitic systems that drain life.

• We are invited to cultivate the garden: to live as stewards, to resist despair, to nurture holiness in the soil of our lives.

Conflict remains but the Christian does not fear it. As Paul says: “Suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, and character produces hope” (Romans 5:3–4).

The thorns of the rose do not cancel its beauty; the labor of the soil does not erase its fruit. Anyone who has grown their own food knows the effort only makes it sweeter.

Conclusion

So is Earth Eden or Evil? The answer is both and neither. It is Eden wounded, corrupted, but with the possibility of redemption. Earth still strives a delicate and intricate balance with the choice between good or evil still possible. It is an almost eternal battleground that we live in every day. It is around us, it tempts us, but it can be worked. The land can be made into something better and so can the people.

Ephesians 2 reminds us: without grace, we are dead in sin, restless as the undead. Yet with Christ, we are raised, restored, and made new. The same is true for creation.

Until then remember Samwise's words to Frodo, though life is difficult and the world not perfect...

From the misty forests of Eastern Europe to the glowing screens of modern cinema, the vampire lurks in our imagination. Pale, alluring, and cursed, the figure of the vampire fascinates us because it embodies something both terrifying and strangely familiar. Here is a creature that cannot face the dawn, that drinks blood to survive, and that recoils at the sight of the cross.

But beneath the Gothic costumes and pop-culture glamour lies something deeper. The vampire is not just a horror trope. It is a parable of sin itself, a shadow of what happens when the soul turns away from the light of God. An example of the brutal confrontation we must sometimes have with ourselves to escape sin. In every vampire story, we glimpse a theological drama: the corruption of the soul, the counterfeit of eternal life, and the unstoppable victory of Christ’s light…

Sin as Parasitic Hunger

At its heart, sin is not creative. It does not bring forth new life or lasting joy. Instead, sin drains, consumes, and depletes.

A vampire does not grow food, raise children, or create beauty. It only feeds parasitically on the living. In this way, the vampire is an image of what sin does to the soul. Lust reduces others to objects. Greed devours joy. Pride feeds off the humiliation of others. Every sin takes rather than gives.

St. Augustine described sin as curvatus in se, the soul “curved inward on itself.” Instead of living in openness toward God and neighbor, the sinful soul folds in, feeding on itself, unable to flourish. The vampire embodies this reality: a creature closed off, condemned to repeat the same hunger, unable to love or to be loved except by draining others dry. Echoed by J.R.R Tolkien’s words in The Silmarillion:

“The Shadow that bred them can only mock, it cannot make: not real new things of its own. It cannot make real new things of its own. So it corrupted them.”

This is why vampire stories resonate. Deep down, we recognize the same danger in ourselves. Sin promises sweetness but leaves us hungry, restless, and empty.

The Inverted Eucharist

In John 6:54, Christ declares: “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.” The Eucharist is the supreme act of self-giving: Christ pouring Himself out so that we may live. Every Mass is a renewal of this mystery, life through the blood of Christ, shared freely.

Vampirism is a twisted parody of this sacrament. The vampire also drinks blood, but not in communion or grace. Instead, it steals blood to prolong a cursed existence. This is not a life-giving sacrament but a sacrament of corruption. It is a false communion, where the consumer is damned and the victim is destroyed.

Just as idolatry distorts true worship, vampirism distorts the Eucharist. It is the devil’s parody of salvation: taking what Christ offers freely, and twisting it into an endless hunger.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula understood this inversion. The Count drinks the blood of others, binding them to himself in unholy communion. By contrast, Van Helsing and his companions fight with crucifixes, consecrated wafers, and Scripture… The true sacraments that restore life. The novel is less about Gothic scares than about a battle between corrupted, counterfeit blood and the true blood of Christ.

Darkness Cannot Bear the Light

Every vampire tale has the same refrain: the creature cannot face the sun. In folklore, the first rays of dawn reduce the vampire to ash. The symbolism is unmistakable. Malachi 4:2 promises that “the Sun of Righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings.” In Christian theology, light is not just physical it is the very presence of God.

The vampire also recoils from the cross, the sign of Christ’s victory over death. It cannot step onto holy ground, because consecrated spaces reveal its corruption. Even in secular retellings, these symbols remain. The vampire may be updated into modern clothing, but the cross still burns, holy water still scalds, and daylight still destroys.

John 1:5 says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” That verse could be the motto of every vampire tale. The creature embodies darkness, but it cannot bear the presence of holiness.

This is no coincidence. Folklore preserved this imagery because it reflects the truth of sin. Sin thrives in shadows. It grows in secrecy, in what is hidden, in what is left unconfessed. But when brought into the light of Christ through repentance, through prayer, through the sacraments, it cannot endure.

The Undead Soul

One of the most haunting features of vampirism is its liminal state: neither alive nor truly dead. The vampire is the “undead,” trapped in a twilight condition, unable to rest.

This is a startlingly accurate image of the sinner cut off from God. Paul writes in Ephesians 2:1: “You were dead in your trespasses and sins.” Without grace, the human soul is not fully alive, even if it walks and breathes. Like the vampire, it is restless, cursed, and unable to die in peace.

Medieval folklore often connected vampirism with improper burial or excommunication. The soul that had rejected the Church’s life could not rest in consecrated ground. The vampire myth captured this terror: to die outside of grace is to remain spiritually restless, unable to enter the peace of God.

Modern audiences may not fear improper burials, but we still know the restless hunger of the soul without God. The undead figure is not just Gothic horror, it is a mirror of our spiritual condition when enslaved to sin.

Christ the Vampire-Slayer

In every story, the vampire is destroyed not by human cleverness but by holy power. A crucifix, a consecrated host, or the first rays of dawn. The symbolism is clear: only Christ can conquer sin and death.

We may resist temptation with discipline, but the deeper corruption of the soul cannot be healed by effort alone. It is the power of God’s grace that slays the vampire within us. As Revelation 12:11 declares: “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb.”

Notice the inversion again: the vampire steals blood to curse others, but the Lamb gives His blood to bless. The vampire’s hunger is endless, but Christ’s blood satisfies eternally.

The true vampire-slayer is not Van Helsing but Christ working through the human vessel. Every crucifix lifted in folklore points back to Calvary, where the curse of death was broken. Every vampire recoiling from holy water reminds us that baptism destroys sin’s hold. The myth only has power because it reflects the greater reality of redemption.

The Modern Vampire and the Modern Soul

Today’s vampire stories often strip away the Christian elements. In Twilight or Interview with the Vampire, the vampire is no longer a monster to be slain by the cross, but a romantic anti-hero. He is brooding, misunderstood, even desirable.

This shift reveals something about our culture. We are less afraid of sin, and more tempted to sympathize with it. What once was seen as corruption is now seen as identity. The vampire is glamorized in the same way sin is normalized, attempting to deliberately lead us astray by evil.

And yet, the deeper truth remains. The vampire still cannot face the sun. Even in its most secular retellings, the myth cannot escape the allegory: sin flees from light. Addiction, lust, consumerism, self-idolatry, all the modern vampires still leave people drained and enslaved. We may dress them in glamour, but they remain parasitic.

Faith reminds us that the only true liberation comes not from embracing the vampire, but from embracing the cross.

In Conclusion

The vampire is more than a Gothic monster. It is a mirror of our fallen condition: a warning of what happens when life is sought apart from God. A vampire cannot see it’s own reflection, mimicking our lack of self-introspect when we are deep in sin and addiction. It drains, enslaves, and disfigures, leaving us shadows of what we were created to be.

But the story does not end in the coffin. The Christian hope is that Christ’s light breaks every curse. No darkness can withstand His cross. Where the vampire recoils, the saint rises. Where sin corrupts, grace restores.

The night belongs to the Vampire… But the day belongs to Christ.

You wouldn’t expect to see a Roman collar under a lieutenant colonel’s uniform, framed by big black headphones, while a bass-heavy remix of the Super Mario Bros. theme drops for thousands at a major EDM festival. But that’s the vibe with Padre Guilherme Peixoto, a Portuguese Catholic priest whose unlikely path from village parish to global stages has become a living example of going to the margins and meeting people where they actually are.

His story is a case study in modern evangelization and a challenge to our assumptions about what holy work can look like…

From Parish Debt to a Beat

It started small. In the mid-2000s, Fr. Guilherme’s parish in Laúndos was weighed down by renovation debt, and the community was tired of bake sales. He tried something different: karaoke nights and rock sets from his laptop. The debts got cleared and something unexpected began.

Later, after serving as a military chaplain in Afghanistan, he trained formally as a DJ, sharpening what had started as a side project for his parish. What began as a fundraising trick turned into a second language for connecting with people.

When COVID-19 closed churches, he went online with weekly livestreams. Mixing electronic beats with short messages of encouragement, he reached far beyond his village. Those sets made international headlines and introduced the world to “DJ Padre Guilherme.”

A Priest in the Booth And Still at the Altar

At World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon, he was asked to “wake the pilgrims” before the Pope’s Mass. At dawn, he dropped a set laced with lines like “Do not be afraid” and “todos, todos, todos” (everyone, everyone, everyone) to hundreds of thousands of dancing young people. Hours later, he was back in Laúndos saying Mass and officiating weddings. The DJ booth never replaced his parish life rather it runs alongside it.

Mixing Messages Into Music

Fr. Guilherme’s sets aren’t just club tracks. He often layers in snippets of papal speeches, lines from Laudato Si’, or phrases like “don’t be afraid.” At a Halloween festival for 30,000 people, he grinned afterwards: “People were dancing with sentences from Laudato Si’. If I wasn’t there, it would be none. It’s a small seed.”

Fr. Guilherme argues that nightlife doesn’t have to mean chaos. Done right, it can be a safe space where people come together without losing their values. And in 2019… His headphones were blessed by Pope Francis, a small but telling moment that showed how seriously he takes this unusual path.

Why He Matters (Even If You Don’t Like Techno)

1. He’s reaching people where they are. Not everyone walks into church, but they might scroll a livestream or step onto a dance floor.

2. He’s not playing a role. He hasn’t left priesthood for performance; he’s brought performance into his priesthood.

3. He sparks bigger questions. In a country where many young people are drifting from religion, he’s showing one way to open conversation.

From small karaoke nights to global festivals, he’s shown that music and faith don’t have to live in separate worlds, that sometimes the most powerful way to reach people is simply to meet them where they are, without pretense.

What Is the Harrowing of Hell?

Between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, Christian tradition holds that Christ descended into the realm of the dead to rescue Adam, Eve, and the righteous dead into new life…

This moment is known as the Harrowing of Hell: Christ shattering the gates of Hades, binding Satan.

While rarely emphasized in modern Western Christianity, the Harrowing remains a central image in Eastern Orthodoxy, Byzantine iconography, and ancient Christian imagination, the art is some of the most unusual and powerful in all of Christendom, the story even more.

Christ Enters the Place of the Dead

After Jesus died on the cross, His body was laid in the tomb. His soul descended into Sheol, or Hades, the shadowed realm of the dead. This place was not hell in the sense of final damnation, but a waiting ground for all who had died, both just and unjust.

“For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish,
so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”
- Matthew 12:40

This descent was part of the plan from the beginning. Christ entered death fully alive in spirit, with authority.

He Proclaims His Victory

While in the realm of the dead, Christ made a proclamation to the souls who were there. As recorded in 1 Peter, He preached to the "spirits in prison." This was a declaration and invitation, a breaking of the curse of death. His mission was fulfilled. The enemy was defeated, demons running and hiding scared as shown below. The long captivity was ending.

“He was put to death in the body but made alive in the spirit.
After being made alive, He went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits…”
- 1 Peter 3:18–19

This was the moment when death began to break apart. Its silence interrupted by the voice of the risen Christ.

The Righteous Are Set Free

In Christian art and liturgy, Christ is often shown standing above broken doors, with keys and chains scattered at His feet. This image reflects the belief that the power of death was dismantled by Christ’s presence. He did not pass through Hades as a guest.

According to tradition, the souls of the righteous who died before Christ were waiting in hope for this moment. These included figures like Adam and Eve, David, the prophets, and John the Baptist. They could not yet enter heaven, because redemption had not yet been accomplished. Now, Christ came to release them.

“When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive…”
- Ephesians 4:8

“The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised…”
- Matthew 27:52

In many icons, Christ is shown taking Adam and Eve by the wrist and lifting them out of their graves. The gesture is deliberate, indicating Jesus helping us achieve redemption, we are not alone.

Christ Rises from the Dead

On the third day, Jesus rose bodily from the tomb. His resurrection was not a reversal of death. It was the beginning of something entirely new. A new creation had been born in the grave.

“Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.”
- Luke 24:5–6

The same Christ who descended to the dead now stood in the garden, alive in the flesh, triumphant over hell and death.

“The land is mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers.”
- Leviticus 25:23

As a child, Final Fantasy VII was one of my favorite games. Looking back now, I see that its story echoes deep Christian themes. Alongside other influences, it likely helped shape who I am today.

Every character in Final Fantasy VII plays a role in the fight against evil. Each one walks a personal path of salvation. And together, they reflect the diverse journeys of Christ’s disciples.

In Part One, we’ll explore the overarching story and its spiritual allegories. In Part Two, we’ll look more closely at the characters and how their lives mirror the disciples of Jesus.

Final Fantasy VII is a reminder that not all video games are empty or corrupt. Some, like this one, carry profound echoes of the sacred. In an age when so much media feels spiritually hollow if not openly hostile to faith, it’s worth paying attention to the rare stories that still whisper of grace, sacrifice, and redemption.

Midgar: The City of Babel

The story opens in a great mechanical womb: Midgar. A fortress-city powered by Mako, a glowing substance siphoned from the lifestream, deep within the planet. Shinra, the corporate god of this world, reigns supreme, offering light, energy, and progress to those who comply, while burying the poor beneath its steel foundations.

We begin the game with sabotage. A small group of rebels, Avalanche, blows up a Mako reactor. Their act is a protest. The planet is dying. Shinra is bleeding it dry. Most of the city’s inhabitants have stopped noticing, whether voluntarily or by ignorance, becoming cut off from the Divine.

Midgar is more than setting. It is the condition of fallen man: self-assured, technocratic, enthroned on stolen divinity. Like Babel or Rome or Silicon Valley, Midgar is what happens when man builds without God, when he consumes the sacred for convenience.

And yet, even in this fallen city, seeds of longing remain. The rebels seek truth. Aerith, a girl from the slums sells flowers. And Cloud, the mercenary and main character with no past, will soon begin a long pilgrimage home.

Exodus

“Your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God.”
- Isaiah 59:2

When the group flees Midgar, the story expands and the illusions begin to unravel. Cloud is not who he claimed to be. Sephiroth, once a heroic soldier, becomes a shadow in the wilderness, a wanderer seeking reunion with a cosmic mother and enthronement as a god.

This is the Exodus portion of the tale: the journey into the unknown, the confrontation with false idols, the unveiling of hidden sin.

Sephiroth embodies the fallen archangel. A creature once radiant, now warped by pride. His desire is not healing, but domination. He plans to wound the planet and descend into its core to merge with it and become divine. “You will be like God” (Genesis 3:5) is his creed.

Sephiroth is not simply evil. He speaks of prophecy, of purity, of destiny. But his gospel is a counterfeit. Like modern technocrats and cultish ideologues, he offers salvation through control, transcendence without love, reunion without repentance.

Cloud, by contrast, is unraveling. His memories are fragmented. His identity is a collage of trauma, shame, and falsehood. He is, like many today, alienated from his origin and unsure of his name.

But the truth will not stay buried.

Golgotha

“He was pierced for our transgressions... and with His wounds we are healed.”
- Isaiah 53:5

Aerith is the last of the Cetra, an ancient people attuned to the divine. She speaks to the planet. She prays. While others wield swords and guns, she bears the world’s suffering in silence.

In the Forgotten City, a sacred place sought for its intense spiritual energy and deep connection to the planet, she kneels alone. She prays. She seeks divine help, a higher power to intervene and restore what has been desecrated.

Then comes the blade like the Roman spear.

Sephiroth descends from above and pierces her through. There is no warning. No spectacle. Only a swift, precise act of violence as if to silence the last holy voice on earth.

Her death is the Calvary of this story.

Aerith does not resist. She does not curse. She prays. She dies. And with her death, the story begins to shift. Evil is exposed. Hearts are stirred. The illusion breaks.

This moment remains burned into the memory of millions. It is a digital icon of cruciform love… The innocent sufferer whose quiet sacrifice becomes the hinge of redemption. Where others fought, she knelt. Where others cursed, she interceded. Where others survived, she gave herself.

She prayed alone, in a land reminiscent of Eden, a place still alive with divine energy, unspoiled by steel. And there, like Christ in Gethsemane, she chose obedience over survival.

Cloud's Descent and Confession

“The truth will set you free.”
- John 8:32

Cloud collapses. The trauma of Aerith’s death, the revelations of his false memories, and the weight of Sephiroth’s manipulations finally break him.

He falls into the Lifestream… A sea of memory, spirit, and identity. It is a kind of purgatory. And there, he must face himself.

This is the point of repentance.

Cloud was never the hero he pretended to be. His strength was borrowed. His memories were stitched from fragments of guilt and shame. He has spent the story pretending to be someone else.

But in the depths, with Tifa’s help, he remembers the truth. He admits who he was: a scared boy from Nibelheim, desperate to be seen, to be loved. He confesses. And in that confession, he begins to heal.

The Christian life follows the same pattern. Before we can rise with Christ, we must die with Him. Before we can proclaim the Gospel, we must be known in our weakness. The world prizes curated identity. The Kingdom demands the truth.

Cloud returns not stronger, but more honest. And that honesty becomes his strength.

The Final Confrontation

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
- Romans 12:21

As the planet nears collapse, Sephiroth enacts his final plan: to wound the earth so grievously that its healing force will gather into one place where he can merge with it and ascend.

This is the temptation of modern god-making. Hurt the world so deeply that only you can fix it. Create the problem, then sell the solution. Offer yourself as savior to the very world you have broken.

But the story resists this logic. The prayers of Aerith echo. The sacrifice holds. The very planet fights back creating huge living weapons as protectors of nature.

Cloud and his companions descend into the depths, into the crater that Sephiroth has made. There, they do not confront him with machines or science, but with truth. With the bonds forged in suffering. With the memory of the Aerith’s sacrifice.

At the end Cloud goes forward alone and defeats Sephiroth, not as a god, but as a man.

Come Out of Midgar

We all begin in Midgar. We all live under false gods, drink false comforts, and perform false identities. But the call of the Gospel is always the same:

“Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins” (Revelation 18:4).

You do not need to save the world. That work is finished. But you must remember who you are. You must descend into the truth of your life. You must let the false self die.

Only then can you rise at your strongest.

To me, The Road by Cormac McCarthy represents a lone prophet carrying the message of God in a world that has forgotten Him. The boy represents God, he is the vessel of light. When the man tells the boy that he is “carrying the fire,” this is not a metaphor for the light of God that we all carry inside us, but something literal. The boy is the last bastion of uncorrupted humanity in the world.

There are many theories and interpretations of The Road. A common one is that the book is about McCarthy’s second son, whom he had at the age of 66, and that the story is a metaphor for the fact that McCarthy would not live to see his son grow up. I believe, like many others, that the story is ultimately about salvation, about staying true in a world that does everything it can to corrupt you.

“You’re Carrying the Fire”

There is a moment in The Road where the man, nearly dead from exhaustion and sorrow, tells his son, “You’re carrying the fire.” It is one of the final things he ever says to him. The world around them is barren and cold, lifeless as the ash that falls from the sky. But the boy, fragile, quiet, luminous, walks forward. He is the fire-bearer.

In Cormac McCarthy’s apocalyptic novel and film, we are not simply witnessing a post-civilization survival tale. We are reading and watching a parable. This is not just about a father and son in a ruined land. This is about a prophet walking with God. The world is stripped of illusion. What remains is the barest confrontation between darkness and light, corruption and purity, despair and grace.

And in the middle of that blackened world, the boy walks forward. He is the fire.

Together, they make the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.

The Man as Prophet, The Boy as God

The man in The Road is often read as a stand-in for McCarthy himself, a father late in life having had his second son at 66 and being aware he may not see him grow up. The man is ill, aware of his mortality and desperate to shield his son from a decaying world as much as he can in the little time he has. That interpretation holds emotional truth. But beneath it lies a deeper spiritual framework.

He is more than a father, the man is a prophet. He walks through a forsaken land carrying a message not in words but in his devotion to the boy. His every action is guided by the conviction that the boy must live. That he must not be defiled. He protects him not only from death but from the deeper death of moral collapse. Cannibalism, rape, theft, betrayal, these are everywhere. The man will do violence to protect the boy, but he teaches the boy not to become violent himself. It is the tension of righteous guardianship and holy restraint.

The boy, in turn, is not merely a child. He is described again and again as glowing, angelic, different. The man does not see himself as a savior. He sees the boy as the one worth saving. And more than that he sees the boy as the one who brings meaning to his life.

In Christian terms, the man is a John the Baptist figure. He prepares the way. He points not to himself but to another. His task is to guard the light until his time ends.

“He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light.” - John 1:8

And the boy? The boy is Christ. He speaks with grace. He shows mercy when the man will not. He calls others “the good guys” and asks his father to pray. He mourns when others die. His compassion remains untouched. Like Christ, he walks uncorrupted through a fallen world.

A Godless Age

McCarthy’s world is a portrait of spiritual desolation. There are no churches. No sacraments. No songs. Even the sky is smothered. There is no beauty left, only survival. And yet, in that emptiness, we find a purer form of faith. A harder, truer pilgrimage.

The fire they carry is the light of God. Not the sentimental glow of optimism, but the sacred flame that has always stood between humanity and total ruin. It is the fire of Sinai, the fire of Pentecost, the fire that burned in the bush and did not consume it.

In The Road, this fire is threatened from all sides. Most of the remaining humans have abandoned any moral code. They feast on the weak. They hoard. They violate. This is what a world without God looks like, a wasteland of horror. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said, “The test of the morality of a society is what it does for its children.” In McCarthy’s world, the children are hunted and eaten, or taken as slaves and catamites.

It is a clear allegory to the notion that humanity will sacrifice even the most important in order to survive, to sacrifice and abandon God. Despite this, Christ still walks the Earth, God has not abandoned humanity the same.

False Lights and the Burning Bush

Our world is not yet covered in ash, but in many ways, it already resembles McCarthy’s landscape. The sacred has been refused. God is no longer the source of meaning. We chase pleasure and numbness. We call evil good and good evil. We are told to follow our hearts, even as our hearts lead us toward sin. Freedom is redefined as doing whatever you want, no matter the cost. It is a hollow hedonism, dressed up as enlightenment.

The cannibalism in The Road is both literal and symbolic. It represents a culture that, having abandoned God, turns inward and consumes itself. We see its parallels today, in the breakdown of the family, the erosion of trust, and the rebranding of vice as virtue. When the sacred order collapses, people do not become free. They become feral.

At one point, the man recalls blood cults chanting around fires on the distant hills, deranged rituals performed in the dark. These are grotesque echoes of Mount Horeb, where Moses once encountered the burning bush. What was once a mountain of revelation has become a stage for blasphemy. The flame that once revealed God is now used to glorify chaos.

But the man and the boy refuse this new world. They do not settle. They do not descend into madness. Their journey is an exodus, not just through geography, but away from desecration and toward something sacred. The man teaches the boy to remain human, even if it costs him his life. And the boy, with quiet grace, teaches the man to remain gentle.

As St. Gregory of Nyssa wrote, “The soul that loves God is always striving toward the light.” In The Road, that striving is not triumphant. It is painful, slow, and uncertain. But it does not stop. And it does not give in.

A World in Ashes

Near the end of the novel, the man dies. He leaves the boy alone, but not abandoned. Soon after, the boy is found by another family, “the good guys,” who promise to carry him forward. Some read this as an ambiguous or open-ended conclusion. But for the Christian, it reflects the very shape of the Gospel.

Christ dies. He rises. And then He departs. But He does not leave the world in silence. He leaves humanity the Spirit, the flame, the fire. He entrusts that fire to His Church, commanding her to bear witness, to carry the light through the shadows until the end of the age.

In the same way, the boy must entrust it to others. The fire is not extinguished, it is handed over. Like God granting humanity free will, the outcome is no longer controlled. The “good guys” must now choose what to do with what has been entrusted to them. The road continues, but now the fire rests in their hands.

Will they use it for good or a corrupted Eucharist?

“Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” - Psalm 23:4

Ancient Accusation

“Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil?” - Job 1:8

When God poses this question to Satan, it sparks a spiritual confrontation. Satan’s response is chilling in its clarity: Job’s faithfulness, he insists, is dependent on comfort and security.

“Stretch out your hand,” Satan challenges, “and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.”

With these words, a spiritual war begins. The question at stake is simple yet profound: will Job remain faithful when his life is stripped of comfort, blessing, and peace? It is a test of love and loyalty, of integrity when all else is lost.

This ancient story is no mere myth. Rather, it reveals something critical about our own lives. Our souls are each contested, each decision a skirmish in a battle older than humanity itself.

Genius, Madness, and Spirit

It is commonly said that genius walks hand-in-hand with madness. History gives countless examples: great artists, philosophers, saints, and mystics often experienced deep anguish alongside their gifts. Michelangelo struggled with profound melancholy. Dostoevsky battled haunting despair. St. Teresa of Ávila endured years of spiritual torment before attaining clarity and union with God.

Why such suffering among the brightest minds and purest hearts?

The Christian tradition has always known the answer. Genius, whether artistic, intellectual, or spiritual, is dangerous to the powers of darkness. The brighter the spiritual potential, the more fierce the resistance. Demonic forces do not waste their time tempting souls already surrendered to apathy. Rather, they attack those who pursue truth, beauty, and holiness.

In The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis writes:

“Indeed, the safest road to Hell is the gradual one, the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.”

Evil most powerfully targets those who stand apart from this gradual descent, who resist the passive comfort of spiritual decay. Saints and seekers do not suffer because they are weak, but precisely because they threaten spiritual complacency.

The more brightly your soul shines, the greater a target you become.

Progress, Potential, and Spiritual Peril

We live in an age where everything seems within our reach. Technology promises limitless knowledge, limitless comfort, limitless distraction. Yet, paradoxically, this unprecedented access to potential has not made us morally or spiritually stronger. Instead, vice, anxiety, and despair flourish openly.

Why has evil intensified? Or has it simply become more visible?

History provides perspective. In periods of significant human advancement, Renaissance, Enlightenment, Industrial Revolution, spiritual struggles also intensified. With greater possibilities for human flourishing come greater possibilities for corruption.

This dynamic was captured by Dostoevsky in his prophetic novel, The Brothers Karamazov. He saw clearly how modern man, empowered by science and intellect, would face spiritual ruin if separated from God. “If God does not exist,” Dostoevsky wrote, “everything is permitted.” He understood that the spiritual battle intensifies as humanity’s freedom and potential grow.

The paradox is clear: greater freedom means greater responsibility, and greater responsibility invites greater spiritual attack. Evil escalates its assault because the stakes, the potential good humanity can achieve, are higher than ever.

The Enemy Within Your Mind

Many philosophers have noted that the battle between good and evil plays out most vividly in the human mind. Søren Kierkegaard, the Danish Christian thinker, explained this conflict eloquently in The Sickness Unto Death. He believed despair was humanity’s primary spiritual illness. Despair, for Kierkegaard, is the refusal to be oneself before God, a profound rejection of our created nature and divine calling.

Today, our culture offers countless ways to evade facing our true selves. Screens numb our attention. Algorithms dictate our desires. Social media cultivates envy and despair disguised as entertainment. These distractions become substitutes for the sacred.

We no longer openly worship false gods of bronze or stone. Instead, we worship comfort, approval, convenience, and distraction. These modern idols promise freedom, yet enslave us quietly, comfortably.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Christ warns:

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.” - Matthew 7:13

The easy path is crowded precisely because it demands nothing from us. Yet it leads nowhere but emptiness. The narrow way, the way of spiritual warfare, demands constant vigilance and disciplined choices.

This path is hard but ultimately it leads to true freedom.

Free Will and the Worth of Your Soul

God created humanity with freedom precisely because real love cannot exist without choice. He does not force us into obedience. Rather, He invites us into relationship. Satan understood this well when challenging Job’s fidelity: if God’s blessings were removed, would Job still choose faithfulness freely?

This is the eternal wager, repeated in each human life. God places confidence in us. Evil places temptation before us. Both see clearly that your soul matters profoundly.

St. Augustine once wrote:

“God who created you without you, will not save you without you.”

Salvation involves our active participation. We must choose the good freely, often painfully. Each small decision against temptation strengthens us for the greater spiritual trials ahead.

Consider carefully the weight of your choices. Sin is subtle. It begins quietly, small compromises escalating until we barely recognize ourselves. Likewise, holiness is built through quiet, hidden acts of obedience, courage, and humility.

Both good and evil see your eternal worth. Both fight intensely over your soul, because both recognize you bear God’s image.

The Courage to Choose

Spiritual warfare is real. This struggle is not reserved for monks, mystics, or theologians. It involves every soul, including yours. The enemy is cunning, adapting to the age. Vice and temptation today come softly through subtle means: endless scrolling, easy pleasure, quiet despair.

Yet we are not powerless. Scripture assures us:

“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” - James 4:7–8

Resistance requires intentionality. Commit yourself to daily prayer, silence, fasting, reading Scripture, and acts of mercy. Reject passivity and spiritual complacency. Embrace discipline. Become vigilant about your habits, your influences, your small choices.

Remember Job. His battle was immense, but he remained faithful. His story ends not with despair, but with renewal. God restored him abundantly, not as payment for suffering, but as evidence that faithfulness endures.

Your life is no less significant. Your battle, no less real.

Choose how you will live. Choose courageously, humbly, consciously. Evil will whisper lies, offering shortcuts, pleasures without cost. Do not be fooled. These promises are empty.

God trusts you enough to allow spiritual testing. Trust Him enough to endure faithfully.

A Final Reflection

In the spiritual war for your soul, both sides recognize your worth. Satan attacks precisely because he sees your potential. God permits trials precisely because He believes in your ability to withstand and grow stronger.

Your choices shape your eternity. Stand firm, fight well, and choose wisely.

The battle is intense, but the outcome is not uncertain. Christ promises ultimate victory to those who persevere:

“In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33

Live with intention, aware of the war around you. Your soul is contested because your soul is great.

You are worth fighting over. The choice is yours.

Man’s Best Friend

“A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal.” – Proverbs 12:10

In 1923, in the snowy northern prefecture of Akita, Japan, a small Akita puppy was born. He would be named Hachi, meaning “eight,” a number often associated with fortune and new beginnings in Japanese culture. Shortly after his birth, Hachi was brought to Tokyo by a man named Professor Hidesaburō Ueno, who taught agricultural engineering at the University of Tokyo.

Professor Ueno lived in the Shibuya district, and quickly formed a close bond with the dog. As Hachi grew, he began to accompany the professor each morning to Shibuya Station. After Ueno boarded the train to campus, Hachi would return home. In the evening, he would walk again to the station, waiting patiently at the same spot for his master’s return.

This daily ritual became part of the fabric of their lives. A small act, quiet and routine. But love is often hidden in routines. And Hachi’s devotion, though unnoticed by most, was real.

The Train That Never Came

“Where you go, I will go. Where you stay, I will stay.” – Ruth 1:16

On May 21, 1925, Professor Ueno died suddenly at work from a cerebral hemorrhage. He never returned to the station. He never came back for Hachi.

But Hachi didn’t know this. That evening, he returned to Shibuya Station, just as he had every day. He waited, ears alert, eyes searching the crowd. He stayed there until nightfall. The professor never came.

The next day, Hachi returned again. And again. And again.

He would do this every evening for the next nine years.

Nine Years of Waiting

“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” – 1 Corinthians 13:7

At first, station workers and commuters saw Hachi as a nuisance. They tried to shoo him away. But one of Professor Ueno’s former students noticed the dog and learned his story. Moved by the display of loyalty, the student wrote articles that spread through Tokyo and beyond.

Public sentiment began to shift. Locals began bringing Hachi food and water. Some even adjusted their commutes just to catch a glimpse of the now-famous dog. Over time, Hachikō became more than just a loyal pet. He became a symbol.

By the early 1930s, Hachikō’s story was known across Japan. Newspapers covered his vigil. Children learned about him in school. The Station Master began letting Hachi stay in the station at night. In 1934, a statue was erected outside Shibuya Station in his honor. Hachikō himself was present at the ceremony.

Even as age and weather wore him down, Hachikō never stopped waiting. His routine never changed. Every evening, he appeared at the same spot, sitting still among the crowd, watching the doors, expecting a face he never saw again.

The Final Vigil

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” – Matthew 5:4

On March 8, 1935, Hachikō was found dead on a street in Shibuya. He was nearly 12 years old. His body showed signs of age and illness, worms, cancer, and exhaustion, but his vigil had never ceased.

News of his death was carried across the country. People wept. Tributes poured in. In Tokyo, schoolchildren were taught not only math and grammar, but Hachikō’s story… What it meant to be loyal, to love, and to endure.

Today, Hachi’s bronze statue still stands at Shibuya Station. The original was melted down during World War 2, but it’s the significance of the faithful hound led to a new version being cast in 1948.

The statue is one of the most popular meeting spots in Tokyo. On March 8 each year, people gather to lay flowers, offer prayers, and remember the dog who waited.

A Quiet Mirror

“But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you.” – Job 12:7

Hachikō was not aware of the symbolic weight he carried. He did not choose fame or become a metaphor by intention. He was simply faithful. He remembered the man who loved him, and in his own way, he loved back.

In our world loyalty can feel like an afterthought. But animals like Hachikō remind us that some of the most profound acts in life are simple, silent, and steadfast.

We do not need to make Hachikō into a saint or a moralist. We simply need to remember that the love between creatures, man and animal, can carry a beauty that points beyond itself, a natural correction seen across species. It points, however faintly, to the way things are meant to be.

Hachi was preserved upon death and is displayed alongside the bust of his Master, Professor Ueno at Tokyo University’s Agricultural Study Library. His cremated remains enshrined near to his Master’s remains as requested.

The One Who Waits for Us

“I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” – Matthew 28:20

In Christianity, the entire story of the Bible is one of waiting and return, an eventual reunion. In this light, the figure of a dog at a train station, watching, waiting, never giving up, feels less like an anomaly and more like a parable.

Hachikō’s story is not a call to worship animals. It is an invitation to remember that love, once given, calls something out of us and sometimes, even a dog can remind us what steadfast faith means.

Near the close of the Roman Empire, St. Augustine wrote, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” He saw clearly what Rome’s proud citizens refused to see: an empire rotting from the inside out. Rome offered bread, circuses, and distractions. Augustine knew these would never satisfy the human soul.

Today, our cities shimmer with screens and lights brighter than Rome ever dreamed. Distractions are everywhere. Streaming shows fill our empty hours. Endless scrolling numbs our restlessness. But Augustine’s truth remains. We are still restless. Our hearts still search for rest.

For decades, Christianity in America and Europe seemed to fade. Churches emptied. Cathedrals became museums. Religious faith appeared destined for the history books, an old relic of a simpler time. Poll after poll showed declining numbers. The pews were gray with age.

Yet beneath this apparent decay, something surprising happened. A new generation raised in a world that told them life had no meaning, began to search for one. Disillusioned by the emptiness of modern comforts, young people started knocking on church doors again and attending service. They began seeking truth beyond shallow evil and consumer indoctrination.

And so, quietly, without media fanfare or mainstream attention, Christianity began to surge back into the cultural bloodstream.

The Young Seekers

Statistics tell a striking story. According to the Pew Research Center's 2025 report, church attendance among young adults (ages 18–29) in the United States has risen steadily over the past five years, now surpassing numbers last recorded in the 1950s. Similar trends are emerging across Europe. In Britain, a survey by The Guardian revealed that in 2025, weekly church attendance among those under 30 grew by 14%, reversing decades of decline.

But even more remarkable is the growing draw toward Catholicism. In 2025 alone, the Vatican reported a 12% increase in conversions among young people in the US and Europe, the largest annual increase in nearly a century. Young converts speak of a hunger for depth, tradition, and stability in an uncertain world. They are drawn to the quiet reverence of Mass, the contemplative richness of liturgy, and the intellectual heritage of the Church.

Why this sudden embrace of ancient tradition? Because modern life promised them freedom and delivered loneliness. It offered comfort and gave anxiety. It replaced God with self-worship and false idols, and left millions feeling empty.

Evidence of this includes; a 2025 NHS survey in the UK showing one in four young people in England (ages 16–24) now live with a common mental health condition, including anxiety, depression, panic disorder, phobias, and OCD. This is a rise from 18.9 percent in 2014 to 25.8 percent in 2024. In the USA, a Gallup poll from 2023–24 reports that 25 percent of young American men under 35 experience persistent loneliness, exceeding the average in other wealthy nations…

In Jeremiah 6:16, the Lord says:

“Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.”

I think these young people today are doing just that, searching for these ancient paths, and finding truth in the Church rather than fleeting modern trends, relentless negative news, and hollow influencers.

The Return

Historically, periods of great spiritual revival often follow times of deep crisis. After the moral chaos of the late Roman Empire came Augustine’s profound revival. After the despair of the medieval Black Death emerged profound spiritual reformations. After World War II, Europe and America briefly turned to faith for healing and meaning.

We now live in such a time of crisis again, a crisis of meaning. Anxiety and depression among young people have reached historic highs. Isolation and loneliness are rampant. Digital connectedness masks a deep spiritual disconnectedness. We long for something solid beneath our feet and real human connection, something that screens and social media cannot offer.

Young people are returning to Christianity because it grounds them in something beyond themselves. It insists we are not random accidents but beloved children of God… Contrary to the bland, gray matter of atheism that tells children in schools they are not special. It teaches that our suffering and struggle have eternal significance. It calls us not to comfort but to courage, not to follow our feelings but to follow Christ and be strong.

In a world that tells children it is okay to fail… Repeatedly telling children until they believe that is their only option, I think Christianity is telling children they are capable of anything and I think young people want and need to hear that.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Christ asks:

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” (Matthew 16:26)

A generation raised to believe meaning could be bought for the most expensive price of all now sees that true worth lies elsewhere. Many young people are no longer interested in gaining the world at the cost of their souls.

The Revival

What does this revival look like practically? Beyond statistics, it appears in quiet but significant ways. Young people gather for Bible studies in cafés and apartments. Online prayer communities flourish, blending digital technology with ancient devotions. On TikTok and Instagram, young influencers openly share stories of faith, confession, and conversion, attracting millions of followers.

In universities, students organize retreats and conferences around traditional themes: prayer, repentance, and holiness. Catholic groups report unprecedented growth in campus ministries, eucharistic adoration sessions, and confession lines. Young people increasingly seek spiritual directors, reading not self-help gurus but Augustine, Aquinas, and Teresa of Ávila.

Pope Benedict XVI prophetically said in 1969, “From the crisis of today, the Church of tomorrow will emerge, a Church that has lost much. But it will be small and purified. And from it will arise a great power.” Perhaps we are seeing this prophecy unfold before us. Christianity in the West might no longer dominate culture, but it is deepening its roots. It is growing smaller in some places but stronger, clearer, and more resilient.

This is no superficial trend. It is a return to foundations, a revival built on ancient soil. It grows from disillusionment with shallow modernity. It thrives on clarity and commitment, not compromise or convenience.

The Choice

Ultimately, revival demands a choice.

Young and old alike must decide what they will worship. Scripture reminds us:

“Choose this day whom you will serve.” (Joshua 24:15)

Will it be the fading idols of modern culture or the eternal God who gives true meaning and purpose?

In a confused and restless age, the resurgence of faith among the young calls all believers to renewed courage. Despite a sustained effort by evil, many have seen the world offers empty promises but faith offers real answers.

The young will continue the good fight, all is not lost.

If you're uncertain about faith or if you've rejected it because it seemed naive, oppressive, or irrational, you're not alone. Many of us start there, especially in the modern age when it is easy to be nihilistic.

Nearly every major religion has a figure who questioned before they believed.

In Christianity, there’s Thomas the Apostle, the one who refused to believe in the resurrection until he saw the wounds for himself.

This isn’t unique to Christianity. The Buddha’s disciple Śāriputra was a skeptic before becoming one of his wisest followers. Arjuna, in the Bhagavad Gita, broke down in doubt before receiving divine guidance. Even Abraham in the Qur’an asked God for a sign. Moses hesitated. Socrates questioned everything. Doubt has always been a doorway to deeper truth about life.

So if you’ve been told to mock and laugh at religion, or if the peace of believers irritates you, ask yourself: why? If faith brings others joy, but makes you angry, maybe it's not their belief that needs questioning, but if what you are doing makes you happy.

The truth is: there are forces in this world, political, cultural, even spiritual, that benefit from you being confused, lost, and disconnected from deeper meaning. They would rather you scoff than seek, tell you that attitude is the right one while you mindlessly fall through life working a job you don’t want to do, watching shit movies, and consuming pornography wondering why you can’t find real love. But you're allowed to question this life before you die. You're allowed to explore what faith actually is, beneath the noise and propaganda.

That’s what this article is about. Not blind belief. Not dogma. But your sacred right to question everything around you, and the courage to search for something more.

The Touch That Proved the Truth

After the crucifixion, the disciples were scattered and afraid. The tomb was empty. Rumors were swirling. Christ had appeared to some, but not all. And Thomas, absent from the first appearance, could not believe.

“Unless I see in His hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into His side, I will never believe.” - John 20:25

This was not arrogance. It was grief tangled with reason. Thomas had watched his Lord die. He had seen the blood. He had buried his hope. And now, surrounded by rumors and reports, he asked for something more than secondhand faith. He wanted to see for himself. He wanted something real.

Eight days later, Christ returned. This time, for Thomas.

“Put your finger here,” He said, “and see My hands… Do not disbelieve, but believe.” - John 20:27

There is no anger. No scolding. No shame. Christ meets him in the doubt and invites him to touch the truth. This is not a God afraid of questions. This is a God willing to be examined.

The Right to Question

We live in an age where questioning is not illegal, but it is punished. To challenge the dominant narrative, on politics, medicine, gender, morality, or meaning, is to risk exile from polite society. To ask, “Are we certain this is true?” is to be labeled a threat.

Yet faith does not begin with blind agreement. It begins with an invitation: “Come and see.”

The curious mind is not the enemy of faith. Often, it is the seedbed of it. Augustine’s restless heart, Aquinas’ rigorous reason, Pascal’s trembling intellect, all were men who dared to ask, think, and pursue God through questioning.

The Church has always welcomed doubt when it is ordered toward truth. What she warns against is a prideful, mocking doubt, a skepticism that refuses to seek, that tears down without building up. But honest inquiry is something else. It is sacred.

St. Gregory the Great wrote of Thomas: “The unbelief of Thomas has done more for our faith than the faith of the other disciples.”

The Collapse of Thought

We live in a time when people say, "think for yourself," but mean "agree with me." Our age praises independence in theory but punishes it in practice. We are formed more by what we read online and are told than by Scripture, more by algorithms than by old wisdom. Our beliefs are shaped by trends, not tested by truth.

This decline is not just intellectual. It is spiritual.

“The time is coming,” Paul warns, “when people will not endure sound teaching… but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.” - 2 Timothy 4:3

We are already there. Our culture demands instant allegiance to every new idealogy. To hesitate is heresy. To question is betrayal.

When doubt is forbidden, it does not disappear. It festers. People hide their questions, suppress their instincts, and talk underground, in secret.

But Christ never demanded silence from those who struggled. He answered questions. He told stories. He asked even more questions in return. Faith has never required the death of the mind, only it to be open to truth.

Discernment in the Modern Age

Scripture teaches that discernment is the duty of everyone with faith:

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God." - 1 John 4:1

In the modern age of intense spiritual warfare this is more important than ever. There is a battle going on right now with no escape, influence seeps into your home through your TV screen, through your phone, through every form of media. You must decide for yourself what is and isn’t real. What is and isn’t malevolent. What is and isn’t good for you, your family, and your friends.

To test, one must ask. To discern, one must compare. That means confronting culture, opinion, feeling, and teaching with the divine and good in mind, even if contrary to what you are told by others.

Discernment is slow. It is often lonely. But it is necessary.

“Do not be conformed to this world,” Paul says, “but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” - Romans 12:2

Question Everything

In a world allergic to thought, to question is seen as a threat.

To love God with your mind and connect to the divine means asking hard questions. It means seeking answers. It means pressing into discomfort until it gives way to clarity. And when that clarity comes, you stand by the truth.

Truth above all else, no matter how uncomfortable it may be.

Be a modern day doubting Thomas, do not be afraid to ask questions and think for yourself.
